RVD goes UK - Deal, Deal, Deal
Last weekend, a delegation from the Datteln Rowing Club traveled to England to visit our long-standing partner club, the Deal Rowing Club. Even though the weather wasn't always cooperative, it was a weekend full of wonderful experiences, warm encounters, and a true display of friendship between the two clubs.
Friday: Arrival with minor challenges
The journey itself held a few surprises. Traffic jams and a missed ferry meant that not all participants arrived in Deal as planned. While the first groups were able to enjoy the evening with a relaxed get-together at the bar of the Deal Rowing Club, the last travelers didn't reach their destination until around 11:30 p.m. The fatigue from the long journey was quickly forgotten, as they too received a warm welcome from their hosts.
Saturday: English weather
Saturday was supposed to be all about rowing. However, strong winds and unsettled weather made a safe outing impossible. The planned rowing event therefore had to be cancelled with a heavy heart.
There was no sign of bad mood, however. A varied alternative program was quickly organized. Sporting ambition was required during the group mini-golf game, just as it was on the water, and a subsequent tour of Canterbury allowed the participants to explore the historic old town and enjoy the city's unique atmosphere.
In the evening, the official reception took place at the Deal Rowing Club's clubhouse. In a festive atmosphere, the two clubs exchanged small gifts and then enjoyed a pleasant evening together.
Sunday: Farewell
On Sunday there was still time for a relaxed get-together before everyone went their separate ways and began the journey back to Germany.
Conclusion
Even though the rowing event fell victim to the typical English weather this time, the weekend showed that club friendships extend far beyond the shared sport. The warm hospitality of the Deal Rowing Club, many enjoyable conversations, and the convivial atmosphere made the visit a special experience.
